Team Dinner: Twenty Speeches!

All 18 athletes and their 20 staff enjoyed a rare, stress-free evening of fun away from the village. Halfway through the Italian dinner the event quickly started to resemble a speech workshop. After 17 speakers, it was hard to keep track, but at least 20 people stood to share words or motivation, appreciation, or in the case of a few who will remain nameless, just plain banter. The Dutch Tornado and 470 teams as well as the German Yngling team were unfortunate enough to be there as we monopolized the restaurant, but they were good sports. Two Dutch team members even toasted/roasted the USA wishing us good luck. The support shown by Team USA was phenomenal. As one sailor began to tear up, the overwhelming roar of cheers and clapping proved that this group has become a genuine unit and they know they are part of something truly special.

Die neue Mercedes-Benz Limousine vom Typ 180 bricht bei ihrer Vorstellung im August 1953 formal und technisch mit Traditionen aus der Vorkriegszeit. Diese haben neben den Baureihen W 136 und W 191 auch die Typen 300 und 220 geprägt. Der W 120 ist nun der erste Mercedes-Benz Pkw, dessen Karosserie in Pontonform gestaltet ist. Charakteristisch für diesen erstmals im Jahre 1946 in den USA realisierten Aufbau nach dem Three-Box-Prinzip sind voll integrierte Kotflügel, ein rechteckiger Grundriss der Karosserie und die jeweils annähernd als Quader ausgebildeten Fahrzeugbereiche Vorderwagen, Passagierabteil und Heck. Diese Konzeption ermöglicht zugleich einen geringeren Luftwiderstand (was zu weniger Windgeräuschen und sinkendem Verbrauch führt) sowie einen deutlich geräumigeren Innenraum. Der Mercedes-Benz 180 prägt die deutsche Fachsprache der Automobilwelt nachhaltig – und das schon vor seinem Marktstart. Denn der Ponton aus Stuttgart war der erste Erlkönig überhaupt.

Heading for the boat park this morning, the first sign of humidity was the hotel lobby door. The glass was dripping with condensation, signaling the faint of heart to take one last deep breath of air conditioning. Upon walking into to this “crisp,” Qingdao morning, sunglasses fogged for a quick few transitional seconds, and we entered the hot zone. It’s actually not that hot (about 80 degrees F) but the humidity is mildly shocking. In the boat park this morning, Tornado skipper Johnny Lovell realized, “I must have made a mistake this morning. I ran outside, and now even after a cold shower I still can’t cool off.” He immediately slipped into a cooling vest. These vests are strapped with ice packs and unfortunately Johnny happened to grab the one that looked like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, but at least he’s cooling off.
